Proud
September 4, 2010I think I was nervous for my 18 miler, more nervous that I should have been. After all, I have run that far before… haven’t I? Let’s find out…
2007: 18 miles, 20 miles, Chicago Marathon, Indianapolis Marathon
2010: 18 miles, 20 miles, Chicago Marathon
Seven times I have run that distance or further, yet I still feared the distance.
I still doubted my abilities.
I still woke up at 3:30am instead of 5, wrought with nerves.
When everyone else was looking forward to a long holiday weekend, I outwardly agreed while silently lamenting the fact that a good chunk of my weekend would be spent testing my mental strength, physical endurance, and willpower.
And after that….
The run was INCREDIBLE!!!!
My first reaction is to give credit to the weather, which was glorious…. 50s and low 60s, feeling cool and crisp, even when the sun was shining.
While great weather played a magnificence of this run, I’m oing to do something I rarely do, which is to give myself credit.
Good weather or not, 18 miles is a ridiculous accomplishment for anyone, and I should feel especially proud that I ran it and felt great the entire time – something that doesn’t always on much shorter runs!
I think one of the negatives to reading other healthy living blogs is that it has begun to seem normal – average – expected – for people to run marathons.
News flash Val…. it’s not!! Every single long (and short) run is an accomplishment, and I’m going to begin treating them that way. I’m going to start giving myself more credit and being proud of myself more often… both for things I accomplish, things I attempt, and even for for just having creative thoughts, lofty goals, or dreams of greatness.
Why are you proud of yourself today???

I’m really proud of running a half-marathon race yesterday as my training run for the Chicago Marathon! I’m proud of myself for finishing strong and walking only a bare minimum (mostly dodging cups at a water stop)!
Great job though! Isn’t it crazy to think Chicago is almost here?!

Awesome job on rocking your 18! I still find myself freaking out a bit about longer training runs…no matter how many times you’ve done the distance, it’s still a huge deal and worth celebrating! I’m even getting freaked out about how close we are to race day. EEK! Will email you soon re: race weekend details. Looking forward to finally meeting up!!
